Sharad Pawar's Resignation As NCP Chief Won't 'Impact' MVA, Says Maharashtra Congress President

New Delhi: Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Wednesday said that the resignation of Sharad Pawar as Nationalist Congress Party chief will not affect the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, which comprises the Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena (UBT). Speaking to the news agency ANI, he also said that the veteran politician's decision to step down was the NCP's internal matter.

"It will not impact Maha Vikas Aghadi," Nana Patole told ANI when asked if Sharad Pawar's resignation as NCP chief would affect MVA.

It is notable that Pawar was instrumental in the formation of the unlikely alliance of his NCP, Congress, and their then ideological foe Shiv Sena in 2019.

Earlier on Tuesday, senior Maharashtra Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat had said that Pawar, 82, should not step aside when a 'new freedom struggle' is going on.

"Sharad Pawar's presence has extraordinary importance when a new battle for freedom is going on in the country to save the Constitution and democracy, and in such a situation, Pawar should not step aside," he said.

Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said Pawar's decision has taken everyone by 'surprise'.

"A lot of party workers and leaders are urging him to reconsider his decision and we have to await the final outcome," he said.

Sanjay Raut, who is a leader of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and is considered to be close to the NCP supremo, said that leaders like Pawar 'never retire' from politics.

"Leaders like Pawar never retire from politics or social work. This development pertains to their internal party matter and it is not appropriate to comment on it," he said.

But the country and state need his guidance and leadership, Raut added.

He said that considering 'some recent developments, it (Pawar's decision) was not unexpected'. The Rajya Sabha MP also recalled that Sena founder Bal Thackeray had at one point in the 1990s decided to step down, but later changed his mind due to the party cadres' insistence.

Raut also said that the development will not affect the MVA.
As Sharad Pawar Decides To Step Down As NCP Chief, Party Leaders Urge Him To Stay On

As NCP supremo Sharad Pawar on Tuesday announced he has decided to step down as chief of the party he founded and helmed since 1999, many were seen crying and pleading with the 82-year-old wily Maratha strongman to reconsider the surprise decision.

Pawar's dramatic move, which was announced at an event in Mumbai to release the updated version of his Marathi autobiography, could now have a bearing on national and Maharashtra politics ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

A meeting of a committee of party leaders -- which Pawar said should decide on the election for his successor -- was held at his residence later, after which his nephew Ajit Pawar announced that his uncle will need two to three days to 'think over' his decision.

The decision by one of the tallest Opposition leaders in the country, who could bring their parties together against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming General elections, also comes amid intense speculation over Ajit Pawar's next political move.

"I am with you, but not as NCP chief," Pawar said.

Many NCP workers refused to leave the venue of the book launch event even after Sharad Pawar left for his residence. They also threatened to go on a hunger strike and a worker even reportedly threatened to kill himself if Pawar did not relent.

Sharad Pawar blames Congress for his nephew's revolt against the party in 2019...

MUMBAI: In the updated book, “On My Terms”, Sharad Pawar blamed the Congress party for consuming a lot of time for the formation of Maha Vikas Aghadi and staking the claim for power.

Sharad Pawar said that his nephew Ajit Pawar’s early morning oath as deputy chief minister with Devendra Fadnavis as chief minister was a hasty decision because Congress was consuming a lot of time and not showing interest besides making wild demands in the discussions.

In his updated edition of the book, Sharad Pawar said that he had no support for his nephew Ajit Pawar for going with BJP. “I got a call in the morning and came to know about the early morning oath ceremony. It was a shock,” Pawar writes. Then he spoke with Uddhav Thackeray and explained the development and decided to assert the situation when he realized only nine MLAs are with Ajit Pawar and most of them were not aware of the reality. They were misguided saying senior Pawar is part of this development.

Sharad Pawar said that his spouse Pratibha played a major role to pursue Ajit Pawar when he revolted against the party and returned. He says his spouse never takes part in political activities but it was Ajit so she pursued him and forgave him. Ajit Pawar was chosen as deputy chief minister because of the demand of NCP MLAs. Ajit is a very emotional person.

After Sharad Pawar announced his decision to quit as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief, the party workers have been in deep confusion and despair. In Pune, they are staging protests, threatening to resign from the party if the founder does not take back his resignation.

But one worker has gone a step further; he has written a letter to Pawar in his blood, requesting the leader to reconsider his decision to quit.

Sandip Shashikant Kale, 32, an autorickshaw driver, said he is an NCP worker and a “big fan” of Pawar. He also heads the Saheb Foundation, named after Pawar, which does social work.

“I can’t imagine continuing in social life with Saheb resigning. He’s my ideal and I cannot understand his decision to resign. Hence, I have penned him a letter with my blood,” said Kale.

“Saheb, this decision of yours is not acceptable to anyone. We are feeling like orphans. You are our God and we want you to change this decision,” Kale wrote in the letter.

He said that after learning about Pawar quitting on Tuesday afternoon, he couldn’t help but take the drastic step. “I know that in the evening, Ajit Dada (Pawar) appealed to the party workers not to protest and harm themselves. I had written the letter in the afternoon itself and have now posted it to Saheb’s residence at Silver Oak in Mumbai,” said Kale.

The NCP’s Pune unit has also planned several activities to convince the leader to withdraw his resignation. On Tuesday, NCP spokesperson Pradeep Deshmukh, senior leaders Ravindra Malvadkar, Nilesh Nikam, Kaka Chavan, Roopali Patil-Thombare, Sadanand Shetty, Mrunalini Pawar, Ajinkya Palkar and Vikram Jadhav staged a dharna outside the party headquarters in Shivajinagar.

Other senior leaders, including city NCP chief Prashant Jagtap, former mayor Ankush Kakade, and Baburao Chandere, were in Mumbai for the function and also participated in the dharna, appealing to Pawar to withdraw his resignation.
